Poor Man’s Wifi
Ever pulled your hair at wits end when you realized that the strength signal of your wireless router is limited at a minimal distance?
Ever thought of buying a longer antenna for longer distance of the signal strength of the antenna?
Ever had second thoughts of having to spend for a newer antenna?
Ever wondered if you can point the signal of your wireless router at a certain part of the house or place, preventing the signal of the router from being accessed by other persons within your area or vicinity? Just like pointing the electric fan to yourself only.
Ever wondered of having your wireless internet connection boosted up to twice the speed it picks up?
Well I used to wonder just like that until I found out about the “Windsurfer” A Poor Man’s Wifi. It is a homemade antenna. It has the design of a Deep Dish Cylindrical Parabolic or a Parabola. The design utilizes on catching the scattered wave signals and concentrating it on a focal point, in this case the antenna.

This tool is cheap… or should I say free. The materials used in making this wifi booster is mostly scattered around you house. All that is needed is some 10 minutes of your time to make this wifi booster. So what are we waiting for, let’s get this started.

The Materials:
- * Scisscors
- * Paper or cardboard
- * Glue or Stapler
- * Aluminum Foil
- * The Antenna Template Click here
Procedure
Step 1
Print the template. You can resize the template to your liking. I used adobe photoshop for resizing the template. Just make sure that the square remains square whenever you resize the template just to make sure that the measurements are still proportional.

Step 2
Cut the template. If you printed it on a paper make sure you glue it or staple it on a cardboard to make it a little bit stronger. Also cut through the slits in the rectangular piece.

Step 3
Cover the rectangular piece with the aluminum foil using glue or staple it down in place. After gluing and wrapping the rectangle part in foil, i used the slits i cut before to cut through the aluminum.
Step 4
Next up is to bend the other part nearly in half and slide the tabs into the slots on the rectangle piece. I stapled the tabs down for good measure.

That’s it! You have your home made antenna, it certainly looks a bit ugly, but the heck with that, it works as much effective as the wifi booster that you can buy on a shop or sometimes even better. The best thing about it is that, its free, all that you need is a little bit of time. This one is really a bang for the buck.

This is the speed of my connection using speedtest.net with and without the antenna.

Please bear in mind that I am under the plan of Globe wireless broadband 512kbps data service only. But I got the speed that is way over the planned that I have signed up for.

Still aint convinced? after around 10 minutes or so without windsurfer / with windsurfer
remember this is applicable only to wireless internet users, of course it would be stupid to test this if you have wired internet connection. Duh! Remember only to wireless internet subscribers and to wireless routers. ZWEET!

There are two piece of paper. Should I cover the circle paper with aluminum foil? Do you mean cover the whole aluminum foil in front and back of paper?

@michael>> If you can cover it as a whole then go for it, but covering only the front should suffice

sir james,
id like to ask, where’s ur location and hows ur connection lately? i also made my own windsurfer but it seems to give me no speed change? how were u able to boost speed up to 1500kbps? my max is only 580kbps… although i understand that my subscription gives me up to 512 only.
regarding DNS servers, what could possibly be the best server? will it be location dependent? i also noticed that my connection is slower at night, so is this normal since almost every subscriber use their connection at this time?
hoping for your answer,
great site btw….

Hi Angel,
I am located here in Manila, and based on my observations if you would be able to acquire the right IP address (203.177.91.252) along with the windsurfer inserted into the antenna, it would really give you a big difference in terms of the internet connection speed.
The best by far are the OPEN DNS values, but many have pointed out that they are having some problems using open dns since it filters out bad sites and sometimes including some social networking sites and game sites.
Check here > http://www.ljdiaz.com/open-dns-pros-and-cons/
DNS Servers arent location dependent, and can also be used on other internet service providers such as smart bro, pldt mydsl, sky cable etc, i think even dial up users can use the Open DNS so long as they configure it on their own PCs.
and regarding the decreased speed at night, I think it should be the other way around, but as far as my experience regarding the wireless globe broadband are concerned, my speeds fluctuate and sometimes skyrockets at night, specially after office hours.
Another factor is that, I noticed that Globe Wireless broadband reconnects itself kapag mag 12 midnight na, but not always, and because of that your IP address might be changed after the reconnection, that gives you another reason for the slowdown of your internet connection.
Hope that helps Angel

Kuya Jamez,

kasi po naka external antenna nga ako pero weak prn ang connection….
ung s typ ng plan parehas po tau.. d po b pedeng ipang online games ung plan q??
nid ko p po ba mag request ng static ip para makapag online games??

@Rencer,
I can’t say anything yet regarding sa external antenna ng ZTE MF600 kasi never ko pa kinailangan gumamit ng ganun, pero from what I heard hindi rin daw ganun kalaki ang difference ng signal ng Wireless modem kapag naka external antenna.
Maybe its just your location, kasi madami pa din locations na hindi ganun kalakas ang signal ng globe compared to other places in manila.
Pwede gamitin ang globe wireless broadband for internet gaming, yun nga lang hindi maganda kung ikaw ang mag sesever ng games for example yung DOTA, since mababa ang Upload speed ng Globe Wireless Broadband.
And regarding sa Static IP, well I think its possible pero dagdag lang sa bill mo yun. I forgot kung magkanu ang dagdag nila for static IP eh, pero wala pa din ako nababasa na nagpa static IP for a wireless broadband connection.
Maaus naman ang globe wireless broadband for online gaming, yung nga lang mahirap kapag ang game mo eh nakafilter ang mga proxy IP like sa Globe wireless broadband plan, since maraming Globe wireless broadband user ang gumagamit ng same IP.

I don’t see any difference in the two speedtest images. The second image actually shows that the connection got worse.
March 29th, 2010 at 3:22 am
Yes, windsurfer can surely boost the signal range, but not definetly the internet speed….. bandwidth has nothing to do with boost in signal, if you want to have a much higher internet speed. upgrade your connection

I have my router at one end of the 2nd floor and I tested the speed on my phone using speed test on the 1st floor at the other side of the house. Before 3500kb avg and after 9500kb avg.(it’s a 4 bedroom house) I also tested using xbox 360. It’s so much faster!!!
